It is easy to want to share the feast with your furry family members. However, many popular holiday dishes are dangerous for pets. You can keep your pets safe and happy by knowing what to avoid and what to share.

Dangerous Holiday Foods

Your pet’s digestive system is different from yours. Rich, fatty foods like turkey skin, gravy, and buttery mashed potatoes can cause pancreatitis. This is a painful and serious condition.

Other ingredients are toxic. Onions, garlic, and chives can damage your pet’s red blood cells. Grapes and raisins, often found in stuffing or desserts, can cause kidney failure. Never let your pets eat cooked bones, as they can splinter and cause choking or internal damage. Also, keep them away from desserts containing chocolate or the artificial sweetener xylitol.

Safe Ways to Share

You can still give your pet a special holiday meal. A small amount of unseasoned, boneless, skinless turkey is a great treat. A spoonful of plain pumpkin puree or a few green beans are also healthy options.

The best way to include your pet is with treats made just for them. We stock a wide variety of safe and delicious pet treats at Farmer’s Co-op. Giving them their own special snack keeps them occupied and away from the dinner table. This prevents begging and the risk of them eating something harmful.
